Designed for industry, made real by innovators

The programme Industry Challenge Owners worked together with Digital Catapult to define and scope business challenges. These challenges will be tackled by tech innovators through sustainable manufacturing solutions. As a manufacturing and challenge-focused programme, applications must meet one of the challenge briefs.

  • On this page companies will find an introduction to each of the challenges and can click through to read more on each challenge owner and their challenges.
  • Challenge briefing webinar – sign up for the open call webinar here, to get an overview of the programme and meet the Industry Challenge Owners.

Introducing the industry challenges

Below is a list of all the challenges open for applications, click on the links to find out more about each challenge

BAE Systems

BAE Systems provides some of the world’s most advanced, technology-led defence, aerospace and security solutions. It employs a skilled workforce of more than 93,000 people in around 40 countries.

Factory of the Future – Environment control system

BAE Systems is interested in a system that provides analysis of changing environmental factors (such as temperature, humidity etc.) in their Factory of the Future, which supports low volume, high tolerance, highly flexible advanced manufacturing. The system should utilise facility data to offer relevant artificial intelligence (AI) powered analysis and decisions or recommendations that can lead to resource optimisation and other core beneficial factors.

Creagh Concrete

Creagh Concrete is one of the UK’s largest producers of concrete products for a diverse range of market sectors. Creagh is leading the market with innovation in concrete, providing new solutions across the construction industry.

Data analytics for manufacturing process

Creagh Concrete is looking for digital solutions to support optimisations within their manufacturing facility, capturing data on different elements of their manufacturing process and running analytics to help drive process improvements for greater resource and energy efficiency and waste reduction.

End to end life cycle tracking of custom concrete facades/products

Creagh Concrete is looking to take their first step into digitalising their production facility with a sustainable aim in mind. By focusing on developing an asset tracking solution they would be able to create visibility in their ways of working and analyse metrics that they were blind to or have had little visibility over.

Creagh’s vision is to build a solution that will track a prefabricated product from the moment a CAD model is printed to the point where it is loaded onto the courier truck. The two main metrics that a successful solution will measure is location history and concrete maturity.

HS2

HS2 Ltd is the company responsible for developing the HS2 Project, Great Britain’s new high-speed railway. HS2 Ltd is an executive non-departmental public body, sponsored by the Department for Transport

Data-driven decisions for the circular economy

HS2 is looking for a solution to grow the circular economy and provide opportunities for sustainable re-use of materials through processing deconstruction-related data to unlock hidden value in workflows and drive process, resource, and supply chain optimisations.
